At Welson & York, our continued commitment to the environment and high quality products lead to us opening our own factory in 2005, with intentions to raise the manufacturing of bamboo products to the next level.  During the early stages in planning, we thought about the “Big Picture.”  It is not enough to just focus on precise milling and the best performing finishes.  We have to be able to see the living bamboo, and be able to pick and choose the right age, color, and size to make the best bamboo products on the market. 

We started at the top, and pulled some strings at the National Forestry Department Headquarters in Beijing, who are responsible for over 700 million acres of forested land in China, and had them research the ideal location for our new factory.  They came back to us with a remote county in JiangXi Providence with abundant bamboo forests, but it lacked structured management, which allowed local farmers to cut down bamboo at their own discretion, and sell it to anyone who would buy. 

The National Forestry Department contracted Welson & York to manage the harvesting of bamboo for the entire county of Wanan.  Our experienced “Lumboo Jacks” walk through the dense bamboo forests, and carefully select each pole according to maturity, size, and color.  They hand cut each bamboo pole and trim the branches and foliage on site to allow the unused portion to enrich the soil for future bamboo growth.  Our harvesting methods are the least invasive, which have been honed and perfected over three thousand years of bamboo and people thriving in harmony.  We strictly follow guidelines set forth by the National Forestry Department in maintaining a healthy bamboo forest, including a two month period of no harvesting allowing the bamboo’s root system to regenerate new bamboo shoots.

We also utilize high quality adhesives that meet European E1 highest clean air standards, and the latest UV cured HPC (High Performance Coating) cross-linking acrylate blends with micro and nano particles, creating a durable finish with virtually no VOCs.
